Why Digital Signage Is A Sustainable Choice

by Scala Team

Brands are under increasing pressure to be more sustainable and to consider the environment and social impacts of all areas of their business. Technology has a huge role to play in facilitating this. In this blog, we explore some key ways that digital signage helps businesses be more sustainable.

What is sustainability?

According to the traditional definition by the UN IN 1987, ‘sustainability’ is defined as the following:

“development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.

Sustainability applies just as much to a company’s marketing efforts as it does to the rest of its business practices. Your marketing approach should take into consideration the environment, ethics, minimising waste and responsible use of resources. Recent years have seen businesses globally take positive steps to up their game in this area.

4 Reasons Why Digital Signage is a Sustainable Choice

  1. Digital signage = less paper waste
  2. According to The World Counts, paper alone accounts for 26% of all landfill waste. While paper is one of the most recycled products in the world, and 87% of all paper and paperboard in Australia is recycled, there is still a lot of paper waste that could be avoided with digital solutions.
Because paper production is so water and energy intensive, many businesses are turning to digital signage as part of their move to reduce paper waste and embrace sustainable, eco-friendly marketing. A single digital sign can be used to convey multiple messages, while content can be easily replaced and updated at any time with no printing or paper required, unlike traditional posters, flyers, print advertising and printed billboards.

  3. Digital signage = less e-waste and prolonged EOL (End-Of-Life)
  4. With more than 50 million metric tonnes of e-waste generated globally every year, more is being done to reduce redundancy and prolong the life of electronic devices. Sustainable digital signage solutions tend to have a relatively long lifespan, especially when the technology chosen (screens, media players and so on) is of a high quality, is durable, and effort is made to maintain the components. A decent digital signage solution will be a reasonable investment initially, but with the right care businesses can prolong end of life (EOL) and make their digital displays last for a long time, saving both money and the planet.

  5. Digital signage = more eco-friendly than printed billboards
  6. Printed billboards still exist: in Europe, for example, there are between 2 and 8 million billboards displayed at any given time. While more eco-friendly options exist today, traditional billboards can have some serious environmental effects: old signs must be discarded once they are out of date, the paper and materials cannot always be recycled, the ink may not be eco-friendly, and the glue used can be toxic. Further, many physical billboards are made from plastic which takes a very long time to break down, if it ever does break down fully. For these reasons, traditional billboards are increasingly being replaced by more sustainable and eco-friendly digital billboards.

  7. Digital signage = remote management
  8. Digital signage content is controlled using a content management system that can be accessed from anywhere to provide instant updates to signs. This essentially removes the need for on-site visits to replace the content for static signs and billboards, reducing CO2 emissions and other environmental effects of transportation and travel.

  9. Digital signage = more energy-efficient
  10. Digital displays have come a long way when it comes to energy efficiency, with many modern displays designed to consume less power. LED signage, especially, has been shown to consume up to 50-70% less energy than other types of digital displays. Further, some displays come with energy-saving features like smart brightness controls that adjust to environmental light levels, and timers and sensors that switch displays off during certain time or when there is no on around.
